How Alcohol Affects Fitness

I’m not here to persuade you out of drinking because I’d be lying if I told you I don’t have fun in my life and drink with friends/co-workers. But I want to inform you the research behind alcohol consumption and how it affects muscle development.

To put it in perspective, a weekend of hard partying erases approx. 4-5 training days of hard work in a week. However there is a way to minimize this: DRINK CLEAR ALCOHOL. No, not EverClear, but if you are going to drink then drink clear beverages like vodka, tequila, whiskey, and scotch. Don’t drink beer, not even light beer. Beer is extremely high in carbs; The higher your carb intake, the more intense cravings for more carbs.

Why clear beverages? Because you are minimizing the amount of carbs/sugar going into your body, which sugar is terrible for you if you are trying to lose weight/gain muscle. Clear alcohols have ZERO carbs; They have plenty of calories and other bad effects but at least you are minimizing the negative effects empty carbs have on your body.

Best strategy to take when consuming alcohol:

  1. One drink per hour. You can get the desired effect without forcing your body to pay the price
  2. Drink a glass of water after each drink. This will minimize your hang over tomorrow and keep you hydrated throughout the day/night.

At the end of the day, drinking is easy, winning is not. Successful people crave the natural high of excellence more than the artificial high of consuming alcohol. Be smart, reflect on your goals, and make 2019 YOUR YEAR.
